Road, Mountain and Town/Hybrid Bikes
Road bikes
Lightweight frames, narrow wheel profile and a wind cheating riding position makes for a super speedy ride. Great for triathlons, time trials and just generally racing along. Road bikes just get lighter and the advances in technology mean that they are getting stronger and more robust. Choose dual controls for easy gear changes and they can be fitted with lightweight carriers to haul shopping or for touring. Fitting cleats means you get more pull on the upstroke and can really put some power into your ride, maximising output - COME ON! This kind of bike does require a fitting, more so than mountain bikes or hybrids, especially for women and can mean the difference between a racing ride or a painful one.
Mountain bikes
Chunky super grippy tyres, hefty wheels, full suspension or hardtail (just suspension on the front) and frames that are designed with a geometry to cope with hills. With the chunky tyres, MTB's tend to be a bit slower on the road, still good for commuting - especially with lock out suspension, so there is more forward motion than up and down. Really though, these machines are defnitely more for the off-road fun, choose lightweight mudguards to stop clod mouth or crud-eye and a super luminous front light for extreme riding after dark - best to get a good crash hat and knuckle protecting gloves for extra protection, minimising damage!
Town/hybrid bikes
Looking for a bike that can run errands around town, get you to and from work - with a carrier for luggage or shopping? Then the hybrid bike, or town bike might be the one for you. Not only are they good solid bikes perfect for commuting. With wide handlebars and bigger wheels, they are versatile and spontaneous, loving trips down tracks that your more delicate road bike just baulks at. With the right tyres on (not chunky), they can get up a decent speed on the road too. So for everyday comfort and stability with the option of weekend touring or bike rides along the Marriots way, choose the town bike. For that added assistance up hills perhaps an electric bike is the one for you?
