RSPB Suffolk Go Wild Sportive

Event Description

Suffolk’s Wild Coast, with RSPB Minsmere as the beating heart. A network of beautiful wild spaces just waiting to be explored. RSPB Suffolk Go Wild Sportive is the best way to get out on your bike and find these hidden gems. Country lanes, sandy tracks, rooty singletrack, open heath, forest fireroads, vast wetlands, mud, loam, gravel: all to be found on route. This is a route that suits almost any kind of bike that is home off road – from CX race bikes to bouncy full sussers or your favourite old hardtail, the choice is yours. Just make sure that whatever you choose to ride you don’t mind if it gets wet, muddy and dusty and that it is up to the task.

The route sets off from RSPB Minsmere nature reserve, one of the most bio-diverse places in the whole UK, the route will take you through beautiful woodlands and open heathland before heading to Dunwich, where you can always grab an ice cream if you feel the need, before exploring Dunwich Forest where conifer plantations are giving way to lowland heath, one of the UK’s most important habitats. From here we head inland across rolling Suffolk farmland on lanes and bridleways before passing Snape, home to ancient heath, reedbeds, estuaries and more. Then it’s the quiet back lanes and forest tracks to Orford with its castle, quayside and boat trips Havergate Island (Suffolk’s only island!), onwards to the marshlands of Butley and Hollesley nature reserves and a prison café. No, really! Next is the vast network of trails through Rendlesham and Tunstall forests where tails of UFOs abound and mountain bike trails tempt. You then return via Snape to sail alongside pig farms and golf courses past North Warren and Aldringham Walks nature reserves before returning to Minsmere for hot food, cakes, medals and satisfaction at covering 100km of the finest mixed trails in East Anglia.

Three trails are available, 10km, 50km and the full 100km. All start and finish at RSPB Minsmere where there is a café and shop plus family friendly activities, waymarked walking routes and more wildlife than you can shake a stick at. This is an event where the whole family is welcome, either riding the family friendly short route together or waiting for one of your clan to return from the medium or long route while you all enjoy the amazing reserve.
