Why buy an electric bike?
An electric bike, or e-bike, gives all the advantages of a normal bike but can reduce the strain on your body by providing an assisted boost thanks to an electric system. If you are looking to ride faster, stick with the group, give you a hand up the hills, ride faster around the trails or get to work, e-bikes are lightweight, extremely versatile and easy to use. Electric bikes are ideal for commuters, road riders, mountain bikers and leisure cyclists.
Ride Further, Faster
Is an e-bike right for me?
E-bikes are an easy and fun way to get around, they let you go further, faster and help you do more by bike. There is an electric bike for everyone, if you’ve never had a bike before, are coming back from an injury, want to keep up with the group, or just want to have fun. An electric bike helps to flatten hills, they allow you to carry heavier loads and help you to cut back on car/ public transport use. The best part? You still get the benefits of a traditional bike, like exercise, time outside, and not having to sit in traffic jams or find parking.
How do electric bikes work?
Electric bikes work by utilizing an electric motor and battery to assist you when peddling. The battery powers the motor and assists your pedal stroke, some bikes come with controllers that allow you to adjust the amount of power supplied to assist you.
Most e-bikes supply up to a certain wattage with your pedal stroke. Let’s say for example that your e-bike supplies up to 250 watts and assume that you have the bike set to give you full support, this means that if you push hard on the pedals and provide 249 watts of power from your legs the bike will just give you the extra 1 watt to make up to 250 watts. Now if you very lightly touch the pedals and just put in 1 watt of power the bike will supply you the remaining 249 watts to once again bring you up to the 250 watts of power. This means you can work as hard or as easy as you like!
You control the amount of assist the system gives you and the assist only kicks in when you pedal. The motor amplifies the power behind each of your pedal strokes, providing a natural riding feel that makes it seem like your legs are superpowered!
How fast are e-bikes?
Electric bike speed is dependent on the capability and construction of the motor, and maximum electric bike speeds are regulated by law. Most e-bikes in the UK will assist up to 15.5 mph. You can go faster than that, like when you’re blasting down a hill, but the motor will stop assisting once you reach 15.5 mph.
How far can e-bikes go?
Electric bike range is dependent on several factors and can be very complicated to calculate. Some factors you can control, and some you can’t. Controllable factors include the size of your battery, the efficiency of your motor, the level of motor assist you select and how much weight you’re carrying. Uncontrollable factors include wind, weather, temperature and terrain.
How batteries affect range
The bigger your battery, the more capacity you have to go further or go faster. Battery power is measured in watt hours (Wh), the higher the Wh the bigger the battery capacity.
How motor efficiency affects range
An efficient motor will draw less energy than an inefficient motor and this will effect your overall range.
How level of pedal-assist affects range
Most e-bikes come with a few settings to adjust the amount of assistance the bike provides, this will of course effect your range, if you have a lot of assistance your range will fall where as if you have minimum assistance then it will increase.
Long-range electric bikes
Long-range e-bikes are e-bikes designed for long-distance rides and trips. They typically have large capacity batteries, such as 500 Wh or 625 Wh, and efficient motors that help you maximize your range. Some electric bike companies offer the ability to add on a second battery so you can double your range (see our range extenders here)
The general range estimate for an e-bike can vary from 20-100 miles on a single charge. Yes, it’s really wide! This is because there are so many factors that can determine your range. We recommend using Bosch’s range finder tool to help you figure out a more accurate range estimate for your e-bike.
What kinds of electric bikes are there?
There’s an e-bike for almost any type of riding you want to do, including mountain biking, road riding, touring, commuting, city riding and more. Choosing the right e-bike for you is very important. Despite the huge and ever-growing ranges of e-bikes there are essentially 3 main types of e-bike and the factors you need to consider are the same as a regular bike: Terrain, milage, riding style etc.
Electric road bikes let you ride faster with groups, they help you up the climbs (no more waiting for you at the top) and help you to push yourself to go a few extra miles.
Electric mountain bikes give you the power to explore more trails and hit more laps than ever before. You can power up climbs and be your own shuttle. No more pushing up!
Commuting electric bikes (or Hybrid e-bikes) give you the extra power you need to go further, carry more, cut down on car journeys and have fun riding with friends.
